Bellarmine's lacrosse team fell to 2-1 overall after they lost in their home opener by a 12-7 count to the sixth-ranked team in the nation, Maryland, on Saturday.
The Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Derek Hopcroft, but Maryland answered with a goal of their own only 15 seconds after the Bellarmine score, and the game was tied 1-1 after the first period.
But Maryland's offense started to click in the second period, as they outshot the Knights 14-3 for the period, and outscored the Knights 4-1 in the period to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
Bellarmine struck first in the second half as well, but Maryland countered with two goals of their own to take a 7-3 lead. But Bellarmine's Chase Williams netted consecutive goals, cutting the lead to 7-5. Maryland scored once more to extend the lead to 8-5 going into the fourth period.
Maryland scored the first four goals of the fourth, putting the game out of reach. Bellarmine scored two goals late to create the final 12-7 score, but they were unable to slow down the vaunted Maryland offensive attack.
Bellarmine is back in action this Saturday at noon, traveling to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's University.
